One Address, Three Experiences: Inside The Promissory, a Historic Hotel in Downtown Roanoke

If you’re searching for where to stay in Roanoke, 201 South Jefferson Street answers the question three times over. It’s a historic hotel, a Spanish restaurant, and a live music venue, all inside a restored 1912 bank building in the heart of downtown Roanoke.

A Historic Hotel in Downtown Roanoke

The Promissory occupies the former First National Exchange Bank, a 1912 landmark with Beaux-Arts architecture, a marble-and-granite exterior, Ionic columns, and bank vaults still built into the property. Inside, the building holds 27 suite-style rooms across Classic Rooms, One-Bed Suites, Two-Bed Suites, and Lofts, each one built into a structure that spent a century as a bank before it ever took its first guest.

That history is part of what separates The Promissory from other places to stay in Roanoke. The full history of the building and current room availability and rates are both worth a look before you book.

Suerte: Spanish Dining Inside the Hotel

Just off the lobby, Suerte occupies the hotel’s atrium, an open, high-ceilinged space under the same roof as the guest rooms upstairs. Inspired by Bacchanal in New Orleans, Suerte serves Madrid-style small plates, housemade bread, and a wine list built to match, either from a window-facing banquette or as part of the bigger, louder atrium crowd.

Suerte runs on three schedules: dinner Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m., Cafe Suerte Tuesday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. for coffee and quick service, and brunch Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Exchange: Live Music in Downtown Roanoke

The building’s original bank lobby is now The Exchange, a live music hall with standing capacity for more than 1,000 guests, curated by Across-the-Way Productions, the team behind the award-winning FloydFest. The room pairs the original neoclassical architecture with modern sound and lighting, so the history is part of the show, not just the backdrop.

Upcoming shows at The Exchange:

And the best part? Guests attending the concert don’t have to travel far. Your concert experience is just an elevator ride away.
