A Year of Signature Events in Roanoke, VA

Roanoke has a handful of weekends every year when downtown changes pace: patios fill in, sidewalks get busier, and there’s clearly more going on than usual.

If you’re planning a stay at The Promissory, these are the events that shape the year, the closest thing to a Roanoke VA events calendar you’ll need, and worth timing your visit around.

Spring Events in Roanoke, VA: A Season That Moves Quickly

Spring arrives with energy, and it doesn’t take long for the calendar to fill.

By mid-April, the Blue Ridge Marathon brings runners from across the country into downtown Roanoke. The course is known for its elevation and views, but for visitors, it’s the atmosphere that stands out. Elmwood Park becomes the center of it all, with a celebratory finish-line energy that carries through the day. If you’re coming in for race weekend, our guide on where to stay for the Blue Ridge Marathon covers what to expect.

That same stretch of April often overlaps with Down by Downtown, a multi-day music festival that unfolds across venues throughout the city. It’s designed for movement; one show leads to another, and the night builds as you go.

Roanoke’s live music scene doesn’t stop when festival weekends end, either. The Exchange, our own venue right downstairs, hosts touring acts and live performances throughout the year, so there’s often a show waiting at the hotel even outside of festival season.

By May, everything settles into a steady rhythm of back-to-back weekends worth planning around.

The Strawberry Festival opens the month with a distinctly local feel: simple, familiar, and well-loved for good reason.

Local Colors follows, bringing together music, food, and traditions from around the world in a single afternoon at Elmwood Park.

Festival in the Park stretches across Memorial Day weekend, blending art, live music, and a pace that moves easily from daytime browsing into evening performances.

And just beyond that, the Sidewalk Art Show draws artists and visitors into the museum district for one of the region’s longest-running outdoor exhibitions.

It doesn’t really matter when you come in spring. Some festival or event is almost always happening downtown, so there’s no need to plan your trip around any one of them.

Summer Events in Roanoke: A Tradition That Speaks for Itself

By early July, the focus shifts just outside the city to the Salem Fair. It’s familiar in the best way: fair rides, food, live entertainment, and a steady flow of visitors moving through the grounds.

Hundreds of thousands of people come through the gates every summer, drawn by the rides, the food, and the live entertainment spread across the grounds.

Salem Fair runs for nearly two weeks, so you can show up any night or day and it’s still going strong.

Fall Events in Roanoke, VA: Distinct, Intentional, and Easy to Enjoy

Fall’s lineup is smaller than spring’s, but each event has its own identity: an artisan market, a heritage festival, and a weekend built around the outdoors.

Olde Salem Days, typically held in September, turns Main Street into a walkable stretch of artisans, makers, and local vendors. It’s unhurried, easy to move through, and built around good music and community.

Also in September, the Henry Street Heritage Festival celebrates the legacy of Henry Street, once the center of Roanoke’s Black business and music community before urban renewal reshaped the neighborhood. Now held at Elmwood Park, it’s the Harrison Museum of African American Culture’s biggest event of the year, with vendors, music, and programming built around that history.

In October, GO Outside Festival offers something different. Spread between downtown and Explore Park, it blends outdoor recreation with live music and hands-on experiences. It’s one of the easier calls to make when you’re deciding how to spend a fall weekend.

Winter Events in Roanoke: A Season Defined by Atmosphere

By late November, Roanoke is feeling and looking merry and bright.

Illuminights at Explore Park runs through December, offering a quieter, more immersive experience: walking trails lit with hundreds of thousands of lights, small fires, and space to move at your own leisure. It’s best planned in advance, with timed entry and evenings that tend to fill quickly.

At the same time, Dickens of a Christmas brings a more traditional energy to downtown Roanoke. Held across three Friday nights in December, it builds through a tree lighting, a downtown parade, and a pet costume contest, each night adding a little more holiday excitement than the last.
